OPINION: Gun Control: The Tool of Tyrants

“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed.” -The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution

The most important phrase in the Second Amendment is “shall not be infringed.” The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines “infringe” as, “an act as to limit or undermine (something); encroach on.” In a time when a major political party in the United States routinely runs on limiting and eliminating the right to keep and bear arms, it is of the utmost importance we as Texans rally to the cause of preserving our rights.

Those politicians say Americans do not need certain firearms to hunt or to protect themselves. They are perfectly happy to regulate your right to an allowable group of firearms that they deem reasonable. But this is not what the founders were addressing when the Second Amendment was written. At the time of the ratification of the Second Amendment (December 15, 1791), America had just finished an eight year war with a tyrannical government that was oppressing them. The amendment was passed not to hunt or to protect yourself from an intruder, but to protect yourself from a tyrannical government.
